Produced by the film distribution company Utopia, “Day by Day,” chronicles the career of legendary University of Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne, and will make its theatrical debut at seven Marcus Theatres across Nebraska on August 11, with sneak previews at select locations on August 10.

The story of “Day by Day,” is told by former Husker players Mark Brungardt and Josh Davis, who partnered with premier Hollywood sports documentary filmmaker Justin LePera as well as the highly regarded sports documentary cinematographer Tim Gordon and editor Joe Mastromonaco. KLIN News spoke with Josh Davis, who told the story of how the biopic came to be:

“I grew up with Justin LaPera, and he and I live in Colorado. He wanted to go to the CU vs. Nebraska game in 2018. Justin and I wrote tripped it out there. We talked about various films he’d been involved in and kind of broached the subject of Nebraska and why there was never any 30 for 30 done on it. From there we kind of took off. I lined up the interviews. Justin got his team together, did the directing, and then Mark Brungardt went and found our investment. From that point on, we thought it’d be a great idea to get in touch with Coach Osborne and get his feel for what it would be like to create a documentary covering the teams he had coached. He was very positive with it. We continued to interview more and more folks, line them up, and execute the film. COVID slowed us down for a good year and a half…You know, I think we have a really good product. It’s great for the University of Nebraska, it’s great for the fans, it’s great educational piece on what was going on behind the scenes while they were dominating in one of these national championships.”

Interview With Coach Osborne for “Day by Day.”

Davis said this film will provide Husker fans a more rounded view of the trials and tribulations of Coach Osborne’s tenure, “I think it’s a great educational piece to show those fans. It wasn’t just about, ‘Oh, yeah, we had some titles back then.’ It really gives them in depth look at those teams, I don’t think a lot of generations have had that in depth look. The players that were on the team, the storylines while those teams were winning those championships, the backstory on Coach Osborne. I know he’s a legend around Nebraska. He’s kind of a mythical figure. There’s a lot of backstory on him through various adversity that I’m sure thousands of Nebraska fans have no idea about. I think it’s really going to give them more of a tie to the state of Nebraska and one of the best coaches of all time.”

To compile the story of this era, Davis said they conducted more than 30 interviews with past and present Husker legends, rivals and opponents, coaching staff, and national figures. “Tony Veland to Tommie Frazier to Aaron Graham to Dr. Rob Zatechka. The coaching staff, Coach Osborne, Coach Brown, as well as Peyton and Archie Manning, Bobby Bowden and Larry the Cable Guy.”

“Day by Day: The Rise,” is a two part documentary, with the second part anticipated for fall of 2023 as well.
