After former professional drag racer Doug Herbert tragically lost his 2 sons in a fatal crash accident, he created a pro-active driving school for teenagers entitled B.R.A.K.E.S., which stands for “Be responsible, keep everyone safe.”

Since the programs inception in 2008, over 100,000 teenagers and parents have been trained by the course. Graduates of the course—according to Paul C. Friday, PhD, UNC-Charlotte— are approximately 64% less likely to have a car crash in their first three years of driving.

Lincoln parents and teens will join the ranks of educated drivers this weekend, as the B.R.A.K.E.S. program will hold 5 classes this Saturday & Sunday, August 12th and 13th, hosted at the Lincoln Airport.

B.R.A.K.E.S. Central Region General Manager Don Hughes told KLIN News, the program, “was given that name by the teens that first took the course that Doug Herbert put on after his two sons were killed in a fatality crash…and he had to do something. He went back to the boys’ high school to teach the teens how to drive and how to be safe out on the road.”

“They’re going to learn about crash avoidance. They’re going to learn about distracted driving, impaired driving. They’re going to learn how to control their car if they encounter a drop wheel, which is the number one reason for fatalities. And that’s just not for teens. That’s for all motorists and how to control and recover from that safely,” said Hughes.

The course still has spots open and is free for everyone. It costs $99 to sign your teen up, which essentially saves your teen a seat in the course. You can leave your deposit as a donation to the non-profit organization, or you can request a refund at the registration table, at the end of class.
