The Capital Humane Society reported being at capacity between their two locations, the Admission and Assessment Center and the Pieloch Pet Adoption Center, in the beginning of the summer season. While over crowding has eased in the last couple weeks, the shelter is still in need.
The Pieloch Pet Adoption Center has no kennels open still, leaving overflow pets—ready for the adoption process—waiting at the admission center, which are about half full according to the shelters recent daily report card.
“Knock on wood. Sometimes there’ll be a little lull, and then it’ll pick back up again. But we still have a lot of pets looking for homes,” said Executive Director Matt Madcharo. He said adult cats are often over looked this time of year…often overlooked for new born kittens. “Today at the adoption center, every cat cage is going to be full. We’ll have cats that are ready for adoption today that aren’t able to go to the adoption center because there’s not enough empty cages.” Because of this, the Humane Society is still offering their Mary Jo Livingston adoption promotion, where adoption fees for cats five months and older are 50% off.
Beyond adoption, having so many pets, the shelter burns through food and treats much more quickly… and you can help them keep up with demand.
“We go through a lot of canned food this time of year, especially for kittens and cats…donating dog canned food, cat canned food, kitten canned food, all helps. But it needs to be Hills products,” said Madcharo. He added that staff uses treats to help train dogs and encourage good behavior, “the dogs tend to like the really smelly ones, and so things like the “Pup-peroni’s” they’re really great to use at the shelter.”
The Capital Humane Society’s has a wish-list posted on their website to make helping all the dogs, cats, and critters as simple as a few clicks, and products ordered through the amazon wish list will be shipped right to the shelter.
