One of Nebraska men’s basketball’s transfers is in hot water from his previous stop.
Ahron Ulis is facing a tampering with records charge, according to The Gazette in Cedar Rapids, IA. The charge comes as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation probes into sports gambling at colleges in the Hawkeye State, including Iowa.
The criminal complaint filed by the Johnson County Attorney’s Office this week alleges that Ulis, while a member of the Iowa men’s basketball team, disguised nearly 2,000 sports wagers by using his older brother’s information.
The court document says nearly half of the 1,850 bets were placed before Ulis reached 21, the legal betting age in Iowa. The alleged wagers totaled “over $34,000”.
Allegedly at least one wager was on an Iowa sporting event, with more than 400 on NCAA-sanctioned football and basketball games.
NCAA guidelines state that an athlete who bets on their own school “will potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports”.
Ulis transferred to Nebraska earlier this year. He is currently with the team in Spain, but not participating in games.
