By Chase Porter Jul 31, 2023 | 12:33 PM

A tornado touched down in a southeast Lancaster County town Saturday morning for only about 60 seconds… but with ample time to cause significant damage to some buildings and trees in the area.

The EF-1 tornado struck the community of Martell, NE with winds speeds up to 110 miles per hour from about 8:18 a.m. to about 8:19 a.m., covering a little over a quarter mile of distance in that time.

The twister began in the southwest part of Martell and moved south through the town, reaching a maximum width about the size of a football field, 100 yards. Some trees were uprooted and snapped. Buildings in the area sustained some roof and siding damage, including an Air BnB attached to a barn that had the roof torn off.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Dirk Peterson, “As of right now, we have it marked with zero fatalities or injuries.”
