As we approach the Fourth of July Lincoln residents are being urged to use caution when setting off fireworks.  “With the dry grass, with the dryness of the trees, it’s extremely important that everyone be mindful of the type of fireworks they are using,” says Lincoln Fire Inspector Jason Relford.

“There’s a possibility that they will still be hot and still be ignitable.” He says make sure to place fireworks in a metal bucket of water after they cool. He says LFR responds to many trash can fires each year that are caused by the improper disposal of fireworks, which takes them away from other calls.

“When we have the majority of our resources running back-to-back garbage can fires or small bush fires it ties up the engine resources from other medical emergencies.”

When igniting fireworks Relford says stay 15 to 25 feet away from houses and overhead trees.   He also reminds residents that bottle rockets and sky lanterns are not only dangerous, but a fire hazard as well.
