Damage is estimated at $50,o00 after fire broke out at the Willows apartment near 19th and Knox around 12:40 Sunday afternoon. LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman says crews found smoke from a smoldering mattress on the first floor and quickly put it out.
She says no one was hurt but 11 snakes were found dead in their enclosures. She says the cause of the fire was an electrical chord from a battery charger. Damage is estimated at $40,000 to the apartment and $10,000 to the contents.
She says they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to any other units and the Red Cross is helping relocate the resident.
