For the 6th year in a row, Pastor Tom Barber—President and CEO of Peoples City Mission—is going for 24 hours without food, sleep, or shelter, advocating for the homeless. The event titled GIMME SHELTER will be Thursday and Friday, June 15th & 16th, 9am to 9am, PCM staff and friends will be outside of Hy-Vee at 84th and Holdrege.
Speaking with KLIN News, Pastor Tom shared what reflections he walked away with after forsaking these necessities for a full day, “Late at night when no one’s around. I continue to think, you know, I’m doing this, but there are people out there every day that have to do this without any support.”
The theme of the event is Hawaiian! Pastor Tom is known for his iconic Hawaiian shirts, and the shaka hand sign is also used to express friendship, gratitude, goodwill, encouragement, and unity – all things PCM hopes to encourage in the community. They invite everyone in the to come by and visit with Pastor Tom for a photo and a chat. Donations of water will be encouraged and accepted on site.
“We’re certainly meeting a very dire need… but it could be still a very positive experience just to talk about it and think about how we can all do a little something,” said Barber.
