Wyuka Cemetery Requests Re-Zoning Ahead Of Restoration Project

By Chase Porter Jun 13, 2023 | 1:56 PM

The Lincoln City Council considered zoning changes for Wyuka Cemetery ahead of the renovation project coming to the space.

Officials with Wyuka are requesting about 21,000 square feet of the cemetery be rezoned from residential to public use. A key goal of this effort, is the revival of what will be Lincoln’s oldest park, and the addition of an all-inclusive playground.

In addition to play areas, the project will also enhance a pond on the grounds and contribute to the installation of the iconic Pershing Auditorium Mural, which has graced the front of the Centennial Mall Arena for 65 years.

In 2022, state lawmakers committed $1.8 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars to refurbish the pond. Which is projected to begin work this September.

The request for rezoning advanced its 2nd reading at Monday’s council meeting, and is now primed for final reading.
