Lincoln’s new very own airline Red Way debuted its first flight to Orlando, Florida this morning with the second flight to Las Vegas, Nevada scheduled late-afternoon.

The collaborative effort between Lincoln Municipal Airport and air charter Global Crossing Airlines was announced in late March. With th expressed purpose of offering affordable flights to top destinations around the country. Namely: Orlando, Las Vegas, Dallas, Nashville, Austin, Atlanta and Minneapolis.

Along side came an expansion and renovation of the Lincoln Airport to the tune of $55 million. This project created new concession areas featuring the new pub and restaurant “In Flight,” a frequent flyers club which is still currently undergoing renovation efforts and expected to be online in the coming months, expanded passenger gates, and consolidated a portion of the Transportation Security Administration.

Director Of Communications for Lincoln Airport, Rachel Barth told KLIN News how the first flight went, ” It went really well. We knew it was going to be a busy flight….We had pretty smooth check in considering we just moved spaces and even did have some extra TSA security screening. People seemed really excited to get on the first flight and head to Orlando.”

One passenger of morning flight G61011 from Lincoln to Orlando was Lincoln’s very own Mayor, Leirion Gaylor Baird.  KLIN News caught up with her upon landing in FL and asked her how the first Red Way flight went, “It was smooth sailing most of the way. It was wonderful to have such a full flight, full of excited families and children.”

Mayor Gaylor Baird further commented on what this service will mean for the city, “We’re so happy that we have this new direct service between Orlando and Lincoln. It’s a real wonderful chance for our families to have affordable flights to desirable destinations. It’s an opportunity to invite folks to come to Lincoln more easily and efficiently so that we can help grow our economy. This is a fabulous day.”

Gaylor Baird participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony along side Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer at the Orlando International Airport after they arrived around noon in the Sunshine State.

Red Way kicked off with Orlando and Las Vegas today. Here in the next week, flights will take off for Dallas, Atlanta and Minneapolis. By the end of June, departures are scheduled for Nashville and Austin.

“They’re what we consider affordable flights. We want students, young professionals, families, and obviously people in the business community just take advantage of that,” said Barth.
