The Lancaster County Health Department wants residents to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites and help prevent West Nile virus.
The first human case of the virus was recently identified in eastern Nebraska. The virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. The health department will start trapping and testing mosquitoes for the virus this week.
Residents can prevent mosquito bites by limiting time outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks when outside and use an EPA-registered insect repellent when spending time outside, such as those with DEET
You can reduce mosquito breeding grounds by dumping small wading pools daily and maintain swimming pools properly, clear debris, weeds and litter from drainage ways and change water in birdbaths weekly and pet bowls daily.
