Nearly 300 Citations Issued During “O” Street Enforcement Effort

Lincoln Police and the Nebraska State Patrol stepped up enforcement efforts on ‘O’ Street during the Memorial Day weekend.  Hundreds of people gathered on sidewalks to watch cars cruise up and down the street.

The extra enforcement was an attempt to prevent a tragedy like last year when two women were killed and nearly 20 people injured in a fiery two vehicle crash at 51st and ‘O’ Street.

Captain Todd Kocian says there were no major incidents reported.  “We did have three vehicles flee from attempted traffic stops.  Ultimately, those vehicles were all located and those responsible were taken into custody without any further incident.”

Kocian says officers issued 287 citations and 152 warning citations.   The violations included 46 for speeding, 43 for unnecessary noise, 13 for no insurance and ten for no seatbelts.  There were also four citations for DUI and five for negligent driving.

“We’d like to thank the many businesses along ‘O’ Street that worked with the police department and took steps to help deter bad behavior,” Kocian says.  “We’d also like to thank the Nebraska State Patrol for their assistance with the weekend project.”
