The investigation into an off-duty Lancaster County sheriff’s deputy who struck a nine year old girl riding a bike has been completed. LPD Sergeant Chris Vollmer says based on the circumstances as they know them Chief Deputy Ben Houchin won’t be cited for the incident on May 10th near NW 12th and Highland Blvd.
“This is an unfortunate accident, but not dissimilar to the thousands of accidents occurring each year in the City of Lincoln. We hope for the speedy recovery of the child.”
Houchin admitted he looked down for a split second to change the radio station and collided with the child as she entered the street on her bike. Vollmer says their investigation included efforts to identify available neighborhood video.
None has been found of the accident itself,” Vollmer says. “Many owners of common doorbell cameras or zoned security cameras dial
back the sensitivity to avoid repeated trips by cars just driving by.”
Vollmer says they have interviewed witnesses at the scene and if there are people who have direct information and were witnesses to the event, they can contact the Lincoln Police Department at 402-441-6000.
