A ceremony to honor fallen officers from the Lincoln Police Department and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office was held Monday afternoon. The annual observance was held at the law enforcement memorial outside of the Hall of Justice.

“As I pass this great dedication to our fallen, I’m reminded of those that we have lost in the line of duty,” says Police Chief Teresa Ewins, who was the keynote speaker for the ceremony. “It reaffirms of why I do this job and the oath I have taken.”

Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner read the names of the deputies who have died or were killed in the line of duty and Lincoln Police Captain Don Scheinost did the same for LPD.

Their names are etched on the memorial wall.  “It’s true that each day that an officer that leaves home may not come back to their families,” Ewins says. “Those that put on a uniform know the risks of the profession.  We raise our hand and repeat an oath that puts the safety of others before our own.”

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird proclaimed May 16th as Peace Officers Memorial Day in Lincoln.
