On Saturday, April 29th, Lincoln Fire & Rescue will be hosting a “Firefighter for a Day” drill exercise event for UNL athletes.
10 UNL athletes will be participating in various firefighting activities. LFR Captain Nancy Crist gave KLIN News an idea of what tests they’ll face, “We start with a little bit of physical agility, gear fitting, and then we’ll start doing some skills, some hose drags, some hose deployment, search and rescue. Then we have a confidence box where there’s wires and different things, and they have to try to move through and get themselves out through to the other side.”
The goal is to inspire athletes to consider LFR jobs as a possible career path, “Athletes align with what our folks do. You know, it takes a lot of agility and strength for our job… and what better pairing than to tap into what’s really literally in our backyard? And that’s our UNL athletes,” said Crist. “Will they stand up to the test? We’ll see. I think so. I really do. I believe that it’s a perfect transition for an athlete to come and do our job. We kind of think of ourselves as elite athletes, if you will, just in a different trade.”
The event will be held at the LFR Training Center at 300 South Street (Across from Sherman Field), from 12:30-1:30 pm.
