The Lincoln Police Department will join in a nationwide “Drug Impaired Driving” Mobilization effort this week.  Officers will be conducting extra enforcement throughout the city on April 20 and 21 to help reduce drug-impaired driving on those days.

LPD says the officers working this enforcement detail have all received advanced training in drugged driving detection.  “Drivers are urged to remember that if you feel different, you drive different and you face the same legal repercussions for driving high as you do for driving under the
influence of alcohol,” says Sergeant Chris Vollmer.

“If you are stopped while driving high, you will get a DUI.”   Police say the psychoactive component of marijuana can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance and make it more difficult to keep a steady lane position.

“There are many misconceptions about marijuana use, such as rumors that it can make you a safer driver or it can’t impair you. Several scientific studies show this is false,” Vollmer says.

“If you’re feeling a little high, buzzed or stoned, never get behind the wheel. If you do, you will be arrested for DUI.  The Nebraska Department of Transportation-Highway Safety Office is providing funding for overtime for increased enforcement during this campaign.
