Nebraska Sec. Of State Testifies Before Congress on Election Security and Voter ID

By Chase Porter Mar 29, 2023 | 1:58 PM

Nebraska Secretary Of State Bob Evnen was invited to testify before the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration on Tuesday. The committee is chaired by Senator Amy Klobuchar and Nebraska US Senator Deb Fischer is the Ranking Member.

Evnen opened up before the committee about the Nebraska 2022 general election,

“Our election officials across the state did an exemplary job of conducting an accurate and secure election… I would like to take this opportunity this afternoon to express my thanks and gratitude to our friends and neighbors across the state of Nebraska who are the election officials who conducted an outstanding election for our citizens.”

Evnen also took time to describe the levels of scrutiny Nebraska elections are subject to. He described that every vote tabulator in Nebraska is tested three times before election day, the state’s office runs two mock elections, and after the election, ten percent of all votes were hand-counted, with at least one precinct in all of Nebraska’s 93 counties being apart of that hand count.

“In all, our county’s hand-counted 48,292 ballots…In total, out of the more than 48,000 ballots hand-counted, discrepancies were noted on 11 ballots. That’s a discrepancy rate of 23-thousandths of 1%,” said Evnen

Evnen is also a long-time supporter of Voter ID laws. Nebraska voters recently passed on the 2022 ballot a law to require a valid state photo ID to vote. The legislature is now deliberating how to enact implement the law in the state.

Evnen said, “My office estimates that between 97-98% of registered voters in our state already have state issued photo IDs. I am confident that effective legislation will be passed that will carry out Nebraska’s new voter ID constitutional requirement without disenfranchising any legitimate voters.”
