The importance of regional poison centers are being spotlighted during National Poison Prevention Week. The Nebraska Regional Poison Center offers several resources to assist with poison prevention and response.
People who have questions or concerns about poisonings can call 1-800-222-1222. The hotline is answered by registered nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “Double doses of medications, adverse effects of medications, chemical exposures, we cover pretty much everything if you have a question for us we can help you out,” says Angie Pasho, a nurse and educator with the poison center.
In many cases the poison center is a quicker alternative that going to an emergency room or doing internet searches.
Here are a few tips for poison prevention:
- Check your home and garage cleaning and laundry supplies, plants, alcohol, pesticides, gasoline, and medicine. Keep them locked up and out of sight.
- Never refer to medicine as “candy.” Put medicines including vitamins up and away after every use. Read all labels carefully on medicine and household products.
- Never mix household products together. Keep chemicals in their original containers.
- Keep liquid nicotine, vape pens and cigarettes out of the reach of children and locked up. Be aware that many product labels look like candy or other liquids that can entice kids.
