Lincoln State Senator George Dungan introduced a bill before a legislative committee on Thursday that would allocate $1.5 million to assist with the relocation of the historic Pershing mural to Wyuka Cemetery.

“It’s not just the mural, it’s the green space as well,” Dungan says.  “It’s the stage we’re creating, it’s the area where people can go walk, bike and hang out with their families.”

The 38 by 100 foot mural has more than 760,000 tile pieces today that were removed last year from the arena, which is slated to be demolished later this year.

In addition to the proposed state funding, private donations will cover the rest of the $3 million price tag.  Liz Shea-McCoy led the campaign to save the mural and says plans call for it to be installed near Wyuka’s pond.

“When installed, the mural will be closer to eye level. Ten feet off the ground with seating and fully inclusive access.”  She says the ultimate goal is to provide an artwork for generations to come.

The nearly 140 acre cemetery was established in 1869.
