A Nebraska group gathered at the Capitol Thursday morning to call for an end to the death penalty. Nebraskans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty was joined at the late morning news conference Nebraskans who lost loved ones to murder.
They are pushing for passage of legislative resolutions that were introduced by Omaha State Senator Terrell McKinney. If passed, both would go resolutions would go before Nebraska voters on the 2024 general election ballot. Both resolutions were brought before the Judiciary Committee on Thursday afternoon.
LR17CA would eliminates the death penalty by reducing it to life imprisonment. LR27CA would expand the Board of Pardons and create the Board of Commutations. NADP says the added expertise could help reduce the harmful impact of unjustly harsh sentences.
