A local non profit, all volunteer, bike repair organization needs old bike donations. They delivered 963 refurbished bicycles in 2022. This year, they’re aiming for 1000.
The Lincoln Bike Kitchen, located on 1635 S 1st St, is a community-building organization that provides bicycles and related resources to all people. As a part of their mission statement, they “advocate for utilitarian bicycling as a vital part of a healthy, equitable and sustainable community.”
The president of LBK, Bob Von Kaenel, hopes through bike refurbishing , volunteering, and donations, they can meet and surpass their four digit goal of 1000 bikes delivered to kids and adults all across Lincoln. They need your old bikes to accomplish this. If you have a bicycle collecting dust, considering giving it a new life by donating it to the Lincoln Bike Kitchen. In a interview with KLIN News, he said many referrals come from social workers, councilors, teachers, and church groups.
Think your old bike is too dusty & beat up to donate? Think again. The Lincoln Bike Kitchen also recycles any bike brought in they can make use of. Von Kaenel says
“[We] make sure that the aluminum, and steel, and rubber, all get recycled properly so at least things don’t end up in a landfill…”
This embodies the second half the LBK mission statement, “We connect cycling to broader environmental and social issues through outreach, and education.”
