The disappointing season-opening weekend is now well in the rearview mirror.
Nebraska baseball took a massive step forward Friday, topping No. 7 Vanderbilt 5-3 at the Cambria Classic in Minneapolis. The Huskers are now 4-3-1 on the year.
NU got on the board first with a Griffin Everitt double in the second inning. Vanderbilt then struck back with a pair of homers in the fourth inning and another in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Casey Burnham knocked a double to get the Huskers within one run. Then with Brice Matthews at the plate, a passed ball scored Charlie Fischer, tying the game.
Garrett Anglim’s eight inning homer gave NU the lead before Matthews doubled to score Burnham, adding an insurance run.
Emmett Olson gave Big Red 6.0 innings in the start, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Olson struck out five while walking three, hitting another batter.
Shay Schanaman took the hill for the final 3.0 innings, allowing just a single hit while striking out three and not handing out any free passes.
All three Vanderbilt pitchers had a run score during their outings.
Max Anderson joined Burnham in putting together three-hit performances. All three of Burnham’s hits were doubles.
The Huskers racked up 13 hits to Vanderbilt’s five.
Nebraska takes on Hawaii Saturday before facing off with No. 4 Ole Miss Sunday.
