A tie may have been the best case scenario for Nebraska baseball Monday.

The Huskers held a 16-10 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but another opening weekend pitching collapse saw San Diego post six runs. Due to a travel deadline, no more innings could be played, meaning the series finale finished in a tie. Had the Huskers needed to see what other arms could trot out of the bullpen, the eighth and ninth innings could have been interesting.

A strange game of runs, Nebraska jumped out 4-1 after two innings. San Diego then ran up nine runs in the fourth inning, only for the Huskers to post five runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and five more in the seventh.

NU finished with 17 hits on the day, led by a 3-for-4 performance from Brice Matthews. Dylan Carey and Charlie Fischer both notched home runs, with Fischer driving in four RBI.

But it was the Husker pitching that fed the Toreros. Eight Huskers made appearances, with none going more than 2.0 innings. They combined to hold San Diego to seven hits and struck out five batters, but issued eight walks and hit three others with pitches.

Now 0-3-1 to begin the season, Nebraska heads to South Alabama for a series this weekend.
