A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, titled American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, recently opened at the Nebraska History Museum. The civic-minded exhibit explores the creation and ongoing significance of American democracy.
“The exhibit really kind of dives into a bunch of different topics, including what does it mean to be a citizen?” said museum spokesman Chris Goforth in a conversation with KLIN News. “And how do people participate in that government, that is, of the people, by the people, and for the people?”
American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith begins with the creation of American democracy and moves into more analytical ideas about how government can represent the common citizen and the evolution of voting rights. Goforth praised the exhibit as a chance for Lincolnites to jump into civics.
“There have been studies and research that shows that the average student has about $50 spent on their STEM education, but when it comes to civics and social studies education, that average student sees about five cents.”
American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith runs until May 20th. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for those five to 18, and free to children four and under. Reservations are not needed.
