LPD Arrests Protesters At Housing Development Site

By Tom Stanton Feb 7, 2023 | 11:38 AM

Lincoln Police say several trespassing arrests have been made since Monday at a housing development site near Wilderness Park.  Native American activists joined hands and formed a line across the road to try and block heavy equipment from accessing the worksite.

The activists believe the development will disrupt sacred sweat lodge ceremonies that are held across the road from the site. “Native people, we’ve been forcibly removed for the last 500 years,” Renee Sans Souci of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska told KLIN News.  “Were tired of this.  Leave us alone and go develop somewhere else, not here.”

Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins says officers are on site making sure the protests remains peaceful. “We had one arrest yesterday and we have had multiple arrests today.  Everyone’s being very cooperative and peaceful.”

The protesters with the Niskithe Prayer Camp set up a tipi across the street from the development.  Developers plan to build 162 homes, 134 town homes and more than 200 apartments on the site.
