More details have been released after several explosive devices were found in a vehicle and a northwest Lincoln apartment Wednesday morning. Assistant LPD Police Chief Brian Jackson says an officer found drugs and two explosive devices during a traffic stop at NW 7th and West Cornhusker Highway.
Jackson says the officer saw drugs in the vehicle. During a search of the vehicle the officer found what turned out to be two suspicious items that turned out to be homemade explosive devices. “They began attempting to open them and then discovered powder and other items that caused them concern,” Jackson says
“The officer who made the stop is familiar based on his background in the military with IED’s.” The driver, 23 year old Dominick Fossberg of Lincoln was arrested for two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers continued their investigation and contacted the vehicles owner, 24 year old Spenser Speidell, at his apartment near NW 8th and West Saunders Street. A search warrant was served and three additional explosive devices were found. Jackson says they are still trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the existence of the items found.
“That is also why we have our state and federal partners involved. We have no indication of any domestic extremism, but certainly of concern based on the nature of the violations.
Speidell was arrested for unlawful possession of explosive materials and Lancaster County Attorney Pat Condon says he will charge Speidell with possession of a destructive device.
