The Nebraska Department of Corrections says a staff member at the Reception and Treatment Center suffered serious injuries after being assaulted on Tuesday inside a pantry office.
Corrections officials say the inmate was verbally aggressive to the staff member and punched him in the head. He then deployed pepper spray, which accidentally hit a second staff person. That staff member managed to escort the inmate out of the office and called for help.
The injured employee went to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. The other staff member was not injured. Both were treated for their exposure to the spray.
An investigation is underway. Findings will be provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions, such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.
