The Lancaster Sheriff’s Office was called to a fatal crash at about 162nd and Highway 6 east of Waverly on Friday. Deputies responded to a head-on collision between a Volkswagen Jetta, which was found in the southbound lane and a semi in the north lane. Both vehicles were heavily damaged.
LSO believes the Jetta was headed west and the truck was traveling eastbound. Chief Deputy Sheriff Ben Houchin tells KLIN News, “The Jetta did swerve into the semi’s lane of travel, which was the westbound lane, and they collided head-on. The semi then again went into the north ditch and flipped.
The driver and only occupant was trapped for a while, and rescue individuals from Waverly and Southeast Fire and Rescue had to come and get him out. The driver of the Jetta was pronounced dead at the scene.”
The driver of the semi has been identified as John Tran, 47, of Lincoln. Tran was taken by ambulance to Bryan Health West Campus and is reported to be in serious but stable condition. His injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
The driver of the Jetta has been identified as 18-year-old Harrison Miller, of Omaha. LSO believes Miller was wearing a seatbelt and that alcohol or drugs were not involved. Highway 6 between Waverly Rd and N 162nd St was closed for several hours.
