A Nebraska football coach is facing domestic assault charges.
Mickey Joseph, former Husker player and interim head coach for the majority of the past season, was arrested Wednesday by Lincoln Police officers for domestic assault and strangulation. An LPD release says Joseph was taken into custody around 2 p.m. near South 34th and Tree Line Drive.
“Upon concluding the investigation, Robert ‘Mickey’ Joseph, age 54 of Lincoln, was arrested at a separate location, for Strangulation and 3rd Degree Domestic Assault. He was lodged in the Lancaster County Jail,” an LPD release stated.
The release added that a news release is not normally provided for a domestic-related arrest, but did so due to the “high-profile nature of the person involved”.
Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts issued a statement following the LPD release.
“I was made aware of the charges against Coach Joseph and given the nature of the allegations and based on University policy he has been placed on administrative leave. We will have no additional comment at this time.”
Joseph played quarterback for Nebraska from 1988-91. He returned to Lincoln as an assistant coach earlier this year before taking over for the fired Scott Frost.
