Lancaster County officials will be opening County Bridge D-88 east of highway 79 on Agnew on Thursday afternoon. The roadway will be open at 3:30. The 26’ wide x 120’ long CSB bridge that was built in 1962 was critically damaged in the 2015 flood and came very close to failing due to dramatic erosion issues.
60 years ago the bridge was originally designed and built by the United States Department of Defense to convey missiles to the missile silos in the area. The bridge was replaced with a 209’, 5-span, continuous concrete slab bridge. By making this bridge longer it will be more resilient to scour and bank failure in the future, which extends the life of this structure.
The bridge was designed by Schemmer Assoicates, Inc. and constructed by JJK Construction. At a cost of approximately $ 2,300,000. “Lancaster County currently has 12 closed bridges and 27 bridges that need to be replaced,” says Lancaster County Engineer Pam Dingman says. ” I will continue to fight for additional funding for new pavement and bridges, which I believe is of great importance to those who live and work in our rural communities.”
