Lincoln homeowners will have the chance to grow their back gardens on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the city’s “Trick or Tree” event. The annual drive-in is sponsored by Lincoln Parks and Recreation and Arbor Day Foundation, among others.
Beginning 8 AM, drivers can go to Mahoney Park for the latest tree distribution, but cars are allowed to arrive as early as 7 AM. Kaylyn Neverve of Lincoln Parks and Recreation talked to KLIN News about the event’s popularity. “We’ll be there until the trees are gone,” said Neverve. “The last time we did it, we got rid of all the trees in under 45 minutes.”
Organizers have 250 trees to be given away for free on a first-come-first-served basis. There is a limit of a single tree per vehicle. Evergreens and deciduous trees are two of the varieties up for grabs, but there are more kinds available to residents who want them.
Lincoln’s trees have come under hard times due to the removal of many ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer and harsh winter storms.
“We just want to be able to keep our community tree canopy growing and full,” said Neverve. “People’s trees in their yards count towards the community tree canopy.”
