Lincoln’s StarTran has been awarded a $23,665,721 million federal grant to design and build a new multi-modal transportation center.

“We are incredibly grateful for this historic $23.6 million investment in Lincoln’s public transportation system, made possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the work of our federal partners, including the Biden Administration and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg,” said Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird. “These funds make it possible for us to connect people more efficiently to their jobs and classrooms, enhance the rider experience, improve working conditions for our bus drivers, and advance our Climate Action Plan goal of developing a cleaner, greener transportation system.”

The new multi-modal transportation center will be the new headquarters for the StarTran transit system, with improved amenities and security for StarTran team members and the public.

The facility will include restrooms for drivers and the public and indoor seating for riders. Bike racks and BikeLNK and ScooterLNK rentals will be available, and the center will also house City parking operations.

A 2020 feasibility study determined that the best location for the center is the current County-City parking lot bounded by South Ninth, 10th, “K” and “L” streets. Public parking for the County-City government complex will also be provided.

The new center will cost about $32.2 million. That includes the federal grant of $23.6 million, the value of the land estimated at $8.3 million, and an additional $841,963 in local funding that consists of a combination of General Funds and StarTran re-appropriated and Capital Improvement Program funds.

The grant is from the U.S. Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant program.
