The National Weather Service has updated the information on today’s expected extreme heat and humidity.  Heat indicies over 110 degrees are possible in the area this afternoon with hot temperatures continuing into late evening.   Actual high temperatures today will likely be in the low 100s.

Notably cooler low 90s are forecast for Sunday with a chance of some precipitation.  Early next week temps are expected to be more seasonal with a warm up late week.

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 9 PM CDT THIS EVENING…

* WHAT…Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 expected.

* WHERE…Portions of east central and southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa.

* WHEN…From noon to 9 PM CDT Saturday.

* IMPACTS…Extreme heat and humidity will significantly   increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Today and Tonight

Dangerous heat is forecast to develop across the area on Saturday afternoon and early evening. An excessive heat warning has been issued for the area due to expected heat indices to 111.

Sunday through Friday

Thunderstorm chances will increase on Saturday night as a front slowly settles south into the area. A strong storm or two is possible with the primary hazard being locally damaging wind gusts, mainly on Saturday evening.

Thunderstorm chances will remain in the forecast into Sunday night, however no severe weather is expected.
