A Lincoln man is facing a list of charges after a chain of events that unfolded around 8:30 Thursday morning.
LPD was called to the Super C at 32nd and Sheridan Blvd. on a report that a man with a long ponytail arrived in a white SUV and left without paying for $78.15 in fuel. Officers were then contacted by a member of the Fugitive Task Force who was conducting surveillance in the 200 block of S 28th Street and saw the SUV parked in front of a house with a person still inside.
The Task Force member was able to determine the 2019 Toyota Highlander had been reported stolen on July 29th from the 600 block of Mesaverde Drive and was valued at $35,000.
Officers responded to the S 29th Street residents and set up a perimeter. When the Task Force approached the SUV to make contact with the person inside, he took off through the back yard, through a wood privacy fence, and hit a LPD cruiser parked in the alley. The officer was not inside the cruiser at the time.
The SUV went through the alley and eventually hit another vehicle near 27th and J. The driver then took off running. Officers took 23 year old Gabriel Olivas into custody near 25th and H. He matched the description of the driver and was out of breath.
Olivas was booked and cited for theft by receiving $5,000 or more, operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, obstructing a police officer, criminal mischief, willful reckless driving, and DUI.
Damage to the cruiser is estimated at $5,000. No further damage estimates are available as reports are still being completed.
