Cleanup Underway After Coal Train Derailment Near Bennet

By Tom Stanton Jul 1, 2022 | 12:15 PM

Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a train derailment near Bennet just after 5:00 Thursday afternoon.  “18 cars derailed full of coal,” says Deputy Chief Ben Houchin.  “Thankfully, no one was hurt.”

Traffic near 190th and Bennet Road was shut down for three hours.  He says Burlington Northern Santa Fe officials believe it will take about three weeks for everything to be cleaned up.

“The bridge collapsed and the tracks were torn up and they have the coal that fell out of the 18 cars.”  The cause of the derailment is under investigation by BNSF.
