Street Medicine Serving Lincoln’s Homeless

By Karla James Jun 27, 2022 | 9:08 AM

A new street medicine program is now an option for those homeless and unsheltered in the city of Lincoln.

Clinic with a Heart recently launched the program in collaboration with Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach. The program offers basic medical care to those who do not have access to traditional health care. This is also referred to as “backpack” medicine and moves the care directly to the street.

Clinic with a Heart volunteer Joel Ruiz and Matt Talbot outreach worker Glenn Schawang recently took to the city streets to administer this program. Ruiz stated “Glen knew every single person we encountered by name. This will be a wonderful partner in this new endeavor.”

Clinic with a Heart Executive Director Teresa Harms says, “Joel Ruiz has been a long time volunteer and truly has a heart to serve others.” Ruiz is a nurse practitioner, though street medicine would be a perfect opportunity for helping Lincoln’s homeless populations.
