Nebraskans React To Roe V Wade Decision

By Tom Stanton Jun 24, 2022 | 1:46 PM

The U-S Supreme Court on Friday voted to overturn Roe V. Wade in a landmark decision.  The decision is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states and has been met with a mix of anger and celebration across the country.

Here in Nebraska, Scout Richters with the American Civil Liberties Union had this reaction to the ruling. “Most Nebraskans support keeping abortion legal in our state because they understand no one should be forced to carry a pregnancy against their will or face the life-altering consequences of being denied abortion care.”

Nebraska Family Alliance Executive Director, Karen Bowling,  is celebrating the decision. “Been working for this day for 49 years and we are so grateful for the court’s decision and for us the real work begins.  We are going to continue to establish a permanent culture of life.”

Nebraska lawmakers have also reacted to the decision:

Republican US Senator Deb Fischer:

“Today’s ruling returns policy making decisions on this issue to state and federal lawmakers. It’s going to take good-faith and empathy to address it.”

Republican Congressman Don Bacon:

“Life is the most precious and today’s decision in the Dobbs case affirms that. It does not outlaw abortion, but puts it in the hands of the elected representatives of the states and Congress.”

“Today, the U.S. Supreme Court made an unconscionable decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, giving the government the seat at our daughter’s exam tables for which many have long coveted. A majority of Americans and Nebraskans do not agree that abortion should be illegal.”

Democratic 1st Congressional District candidate Patty Pansing Brooks:

“Today the U.S. Supreme Court made an unconscionable decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, giving the government the seat at our daughters’ exam tables for which many have long coveted.

Democratic Candidate for 2nd District Congressional seat Tony Vargas:

“Politicians don’t belong in doctor’s offices making medical decisions. Women should make the decisions that are the best for them with their doctors. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court is a clear threat to Americans’ health, safety, and rights.
