Lincoln Police say they have seen an increase in counterfeit money investigations this year. LPD Captain Todd Kocian says from January 1 through June 22 they have investigated 122 reports of counterfeit currency.
“For comparison, during this same time frame in 2021 we had only 75, which represents a 62% increase. For the calendar year 2021 we had a total of 168 reports of counterfeit currency.”
He says it appears most of the counterfeit currency are $20 and $100 bills and are being passed at restaurants and convenience stores. “By the time the realization is made that the bill is not real, whoever passed it is long gone because you’re getting real busy and moving people through the line.”
Kocian says some of the bills have the words “copy,” “not legal tender,” and “movie prop money” in small print.
