Lincoln residents may get an opportunity to vote on the proposed Fairness Ordinance after the Lincoln City Council voted to rescind it. A group called Let Lincoln Vote has launched a petition drive to put the issue before voters in November.
“We’re not trying to change the world and we’re not trying to change Lincoln,” says organizer Kay Siebler. “We know that Lincoln is going to vote for non-discrimination, but Lincoln is going to vote for fairness.”
Siebler says their goal is to let citizens vote on an anti-discrimination ballot initiative. “This is about veterans status, non discrimination for our military, non discrimination for people with disabilities and non discrimination for people regardless of marital status, race, national orgin and sex.”
More than 8,800 hundred signatures are needed before August 1 in order for the measure to be placed on the November General Election ballot. “When we get this to the ballot in November, overwhelmingly Lincoln will vote to affirm anti-discrimination language in Title 11 City Code. Because, that’s who we are,” Siebler says.
