Temperatures will head back into triple digits soon. That means Lincoln Fire and Rescue will be busy answering calls for heat related illness.
LFR Captain Nancy Crist tells KLIN News, “I think we always see a little bit of an uptick during this time of year as people acclimate to the extreme heat but that will taper off.”
The public can do several things to protect yourself from heat related illness.
Crist says, “If you want to work outside or work in the garden, do that first thing in the morning or wait until later in the evening to do that when the sun is starting to go down. If you are feeling nauseated or have a headache come on or feel dizzy. Those are all signs of heat exhaustion so we encourage you to listen to your body and go back inside your house ”
Other tips include pre-hydrating before you go outdoors to work and keep drinking fluids throughout the day. Crist says avoid alcohol as that does not hydrate you. Many people wear long sleeves to protect the skin from sun damage. She recommends using sunscreen instead.
