The CEO of People’s City Mission is raising awareness for struggling families and the homeless by going without food or shelter until 9:00 Friday morning outside the Hy-Vee at 84th and Holdrege.
Pastor Tom Barber says they need people to step up to help make a difference. “It doesn’t take people doing a lot just a lot of people giving a little bit,” Barber says. “You could have things in your closet you don’t want, you could volunteer a little time, you could by somebody a lunch. If everybody did just a little bit we could alleviate so much suffering that’s really happening now.
He says more families are struggling and are at risk of being homeless due to inflation and the economy. Their Help Center is seeing a big increase in the need for assistance and he’s encouraging Lincoln residents to reach out and help someone.
Barber shared with KLIN News the story of one woman who made a difference. “She came up to me with tears in her eyes and she gave me five dollars. She said I’m sleeping in my car, I’m using the Help Center and I just got a job at U-Stop, but I wanted to come and give you the five dollars. It was just so powerful for all of us.”
Barber is inviting the public to come and sit down with him and talk about what’s going on in their lives. He says if possible they would appreciate donations of cases of water to help people in need during this excessive heat.
