Group Opposed to Repeal of Fairness Ordinance

By Mark Vail Jun 10, 2022 | 5:30 AM

The group Lincoln For All released a statement Thursday opposing two motions expected before the Lincoln City Council to repeal proposed changes made in Title 11 of the Lincoln City Municipal Code, more commonly call the Fairness Ordinance.

Councilperson Sändra Washington is quoted as saying “The timing of this motion — during Pride Month and the start of Lincoln’s Pride Weeks — is especially disappointing, and show a lack of respect for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Response to Motion to Repeal Title 11

Lincoln, NE – In response to the published Lincoln City Council agenda that brings forward two motions to repeal proposed changes made in Title 11 of the Lincoln City Municipal Code, Lincoln For All today made the following statement.

This is an action taken by Councilor Meginnis and is not representative of all members of the Lincoln City Council. As an organization, Lincoln For All strongly opposes the repeal of the Title 11 language and encourages the council members to vote against repeal.

The proposed changes to Title 11 were unanimously passed by the Council following a two-year process of working with the stakeholders including members of the LGBTQIA+ community, OutNebraska, and Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and data showing that the majority of Lincolnites favor equity and non-discrimination.

On behalf of Lincoln For All, Councilperson Sändra Washington said, “The timing of this motion – during Pride Month, and at the start of Lincoln’s Pride Week –  is especially disappointing, and shows a lack of respect for the LGBTQIA+ community. A repeal of Title 11 slows our progress on non-discrimination for veterans, people with disabilities, and based on race.”

Councilperson and Lincoln For All coalition member Jane Raybould added, “The fight for equality has been long, and we will remain on the right side of history fighting for people in marginalized communities who deserve fair treatment in all aspects of life. We remain committed to ensuring our city is inclusive and welcoming, it is Lincoln for All.”
