Lincoln Police say vehicle thefts are on the rise so far in 2022.  Sergeant Chris Vollmer says from January 1 through May 22 there has been a 37 percent increase in the number of stolen vehicles.

“Just a reminder as things get a little warmer try not to leave the car running to cool down, unlocked or unattended.”  Vollmer also says theft from vehicles is up 44 percent.   He also says if you do have to leave valuables inside your vehicle make sure they are out of sight.

Compared to the five year average, vehicle thefts are up 60 percent and thefts from vehicles have increased by 52 percent.   Vollmer says fortunately they have had a high recovery rate of stolen vehicles.

He says many of the thieves use the vehicles for joy riding or for short periods of time before ditching them.   Many vehicles are found in other law enforcement jurisdictions.
