LPD Chief Provides Update On Saturday’s Downtown Shooting

By Tom Stanton May 23, 2022 | 10:55 AM

Lincoln Police say two men and a woman were shot outside Gravity Bar near 11th and O Street just after 2:20 Saturday morning.  LPD Police Chief Teresa Ewins says officers heard the gunshots and quickly responded to the scene.

She says around 1:44 a.m. there was a fight inside the bar.  She says the people involved in the altercation were separated.  After the bar closed, Ewins says three people approached a group gathered outside the bar.  “This group included some of the same individuals involved in the previous altercation inside the bar, however, also involved other bar patrons and employees,” Ewins says.

“One of the three subjects opened fire on the group striking three individuals.”  Ewins says a 22-year woman remains hospitalized in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. A 25-year old man is hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The third victim, a 26-year old man, was treated and released.

Ewins praised the officers who responded to the chaotic scene. “When an officer responds to an incident where multiple people are injured, specifically a shooting, it’s incredibly chaotic,” Ewins says. “You have a number of people you don’t know who are shot, you don’t know who was involved, you’re trying to render aid, you’re trying to figure out who was injured. So it is difficult when you come upon something like that.”

Ewins says Lincoln residents don’t have to worry about any ongoing threat.   “I feel very confident that our community is safe and our officers are out there each night, doing their job.  They were right there when it happened. I have great confidence in our people.”

Ewins says they have not made any arrests yet and encourages anyone who saw anything to call them at 402-441-6000 or CrimeStoppers at 402-475-3600.  All CrimeStoppers call are anonymous.
