Man Killed In Waverly Apartment Fire

A 61 year old man is dead after a fire late Tuesday morning at an apartment building in Waverly.   The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says the fire broke out just after 11:00 a.m. at the Northland Apartments at 14020 Lancashire Street.

The fire started in one unit and spread to other units in the building.  There was either fire, smoke or water damage to all 8 units in the building.  Firefighters from Waverly,  Southeast, Greenwood,  Ashland,  Ceresco, Raymond and Eagle all responded and extinguished the flames.

The sheriff’s department says 61 year old Mark Umland was found dead in his apartment.  No other residents of the building were injured. The fire displaced 20 people who lived in those eight apartment.  The American Red Cross is providing assistance to them.

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Damage to the building is estimated at $500,000.
