Update:  KLIN News has learned that State Lawmakers are looking at the possibility of a special session if the U.S. Supreme Court officially votes to overturn Roe VS Wade  Nothing will happen before that ruling is issued.

A leaked document shows the U.S. Supreme Court will vote to overturn Roe VS Wade. That ruling dates back to 1973 and it ruled that state regulation of abortion is unconstitutional.

In the 2022 Legislative Session, State Senator Joni Albrecht introduced LB 993, the Nebraska Human Life Protection Act. While the bill failed to advance and was blocked,  it would have banned abortions in Nebraska if the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Roe VS Wade.

Senator Albrecht tells KLIN News, “It is a very momentous time in the history of our country. There are so many children that have been lost. I’m am just very taken back, shocked and very happy.” Plans are already in the works in preparation of the U.S. Supreme Court vote expected in June.

If Roe VS Wade is overturned, Senator Albrecht says she is certain they will use the bill they had. A few state senators will be getting together to see if any changes need to be made before moving forward. The next step would be for Governor Pete Ricketts to call a special session and have lawmakers return to decide what Nebraska’s next step will be. Senator Albrecht says, “If he doesn’t, we wait until January. We have a lot of new folks coming in and it is up to Nebraskans to vote for the people they need to get into office who are pro-life.”

State Senator Adam Morfeld says striking down Roe VS Wade will inevitably lead to complete bans on not only abortions but other forms of contraception as they unsuccessfully attempted this pass legislative session.

Senator Morfeld told KLIN News, “It (the bill) not only completely banned abortion without exceptions of rape and incest, but also very likely any form of contraception could be banned based on how it was interpreted. I think it would be an easy interpretation to make based on the language.”

Morfeld says he won’t back down in a special session and will fight these dangerous bans that endanger women and violate basic civil rights. He says we will defeat it again as they did last session.

Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer released the following statement today on the Supreme Court’s deliberations in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:

“The breach of the Supreme Court draft opinion in the Dobbs case represents an erosion of trust in one of our most sacred and independent institutions. It is the latest assault on the Court, and especially loathsome in that it comes from within the institution for what appears to be political purposes.

“I have long stood up for life and supported policies that protect the unborn. As we await the official decision from the Court, the Justices have a duty to resist intimidation tactics. Given the consequential questions before them, I hope they will deliberate freely without the influence of undue political pressure.”
