Nebraska’s own holiday is celebrating its 150th anniversary on Friday, April 29th. Arbor Day was founded in 1872 at the home of Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City.
Connie Van Norstrand with Arbor Day Farm tells KLIN News there is another big anniversary on Friday. The Arbor Day Foundation was founded 50 years ago.
Norstrand says, “The mission of the Arbor Day Foundation is to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. That is really what it is all about. It can have an amazing impact on our world. It can have a great impact in your own back yard.”
There are a number of events taking place at Arbor Day Farm this weekend. Norstrand says that admission into the Arbor Lodge itself is at no charge on Friday. This is the original estate of J. Sterling Morton, the founder of Arbor Day. The 52 room mansion is filled with many artifacts of the Morton family.
There are other events taking place during the weekend. Norstrand says other fun activities include events at the Tree Adventure, live music, a visiting artist, wine and cider tasting and more.
