For the past couple of weeks Lincoln residents have been donating shoes for needy people in the community.  On Friday the shoe distribution kick-off for the 12th Annual One Day Without Shoes Drive be held at the People’s City Mission Help Center at 68th and P Street.

Since 2011, Cornhusker Bank and People’s City Mission have partnered to help raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a person’s life by hosting the event.   The public has been encouraged to bring new or used shoes or cash donations to help put good shoes on the feet of Lincoln’s less fortunate.

In the previous eleven years of hosting this event, Cornhusker Bank’s seven Lincoln locations and numerous business partners have collected over 202,000 pairs of shoes and cash donations totaling over $96,000.

Mission officials say more than 100 local businesses and organizations participated in collecting 33,689 pairs of shoes this year, which is a record amount.  On Friday PCM guests will be able to choose shoes for themselves and their families. The remainder of the shoes collected will be distributed over the next several days to needy families who are served at the Help Center.

“We are so incredibly thankful for Cornhusker Bank’s dedication to this drive every year. Thousands of folks in Lincoln will be helped because of all of the shoes and money collected this year. Thank you for your kindness to the homeless and impoverished,”  says Pastor Tom Barber.
