There was a potentially explosive situation Monday afternoon at 148th and Waverly Road. A Waverly city worker was digging up a damaged road post sign when he hit an object. Scanner reports first stated it was a piece of concrete but it was later determined it was a pre-1960 hand grenade.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says, “It looked like it had been buried for many years. The State Patrol Bomb Squad responded and they eventually contacted the Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team. The road was shut down for about two hours while that scene was assessed. At about 4:30 p.m., the grenade was safely detonated and disposed of by the Air Force EOD Team. It was a live grenade.”
Sheriff Wagner says one transmission he heard was that the grenade pin was gone but the spoon was still in place. He says, “It is very fortunate it did not explode. This is a good reminder that even 60 years after-the-fact- there could be military ordinances located. If you think you see what could be an explosive device, don’t touch it and call law enforcement.”
