An officer on patrol caught a suspected catalytic converter thief in the act around 1:30 Sunday morning, April 24th near 70th and P.
The officer spotted a man under a vehicle and saw a catalytic converter on the ground. There was a power tool in the man’s hand. When the suspect saw the officer, he climbed out from under the vehicle and ran northbound while carrying a reciprocating saw.
After a short foot chase, 32 year old Sergey Stoyan was taken into custody. Inside his vehicle, officers located three additional catalytic converters.
Stoyan was booked for theft by unlawful taking, possession of burglary tools, possession of a controlled substance, criminal mischief, and obstructing a police officer.
Damage to the vehicle Stoyan was seen underneath is estimated at $300.
